Pearl Harbor

The Pearl Harbor National Memorial is the most visited attraction in the State of Hawaii. Each year, Pearl Harbor attracts over 1.8 million visitors who come from all over the world to pay their respects to the Arizona Memorial and learn about the attack that triggered the United States' entry into WWII.

The tranquil waters of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, were shattered on December 7, 1941, by the thunderous roar of Japanese warplanes. This surprise attack, meticulously planned and executed, propelled the United States into the maelstrom of World War II, forever altering the course of history for the island nation and the world. Tensions between the US and Japan had been simmering for years. Japan’s expansionist ambitions in Asia clashed with American interests, leading to economic sanctions and diplomatic strains. The attack on Pearl Harbor, however, wasn’t simply an act of aggression; it was a calculated gamble to cripple the US Pacific Fleet and prevent interference in its planned conquests. On Sunday, December 7, 1941, the attack began before dawn. A wave of Japanese planes descended upon the unsuspecting naval base. Battleships, moored in a line, became sitting ducks. Explosions ripped through the air, flames engulfing ships and casting an eerie glow over the water. The USS Arizona, struck by multiple bombs, became a fiery tomb for over 1,100 sailors. Casualties mounted rapidly; civilians were caught in the crossfire, adding to the tragic toll. The attack on Pearl Harbor galvanized the American spirit. President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s iconic “Day of Infamy” speech rallied the nation, uniting it in a resolute response. The US formally declared war on Japan, marking its official entry into World War II. The Pearl Harbor National Memorial is administered by the US National Park Service. Three other museums are located near the Pearl Harbor National Memorial. These are the USS Bowfin and Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum, the USS Missouri Memorial, and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum. Together, they comprise the entity known as Pearl Harbor Historic Sites. They cover all aspects of the Pacific War from start to finish.

Arizona Memorial

The USS Arizona Memorial is a white structure that spans the wreck of the USS Arizona Memorial but does not touch it. The Arizona Memorial Monument is dedicated to the 1,177 sailors and marines who died aboard the USS Arizona during the Japanese surprise attack. The Arizona Memorial was dedicated in 1962. A remembrance ceremony is held on December 7, 1941, each year.

The USS Bowfin and Pacific Fleet Submarine museums.

The USS Bowfin Submarine, often referred to as the “Bowfin submarine,” holds a significant place in naval history as a formidable World War II-era submarine. Nestled within the historic Pearl Harbor, the Submarine USS Bowfin stands as a living testament to the bravery and technological advancements of its time. The USS Bowfin Submarine is not merely an artifact; it is a symbol of naval prowess and the silent service that played a crucial role in the Pacific theater during World War II. Situated in the heart of Pearl Harbor, the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum and Park offers visitors a unique opportunity to step back in time and explore the inner workings of this formidable vessel. The museum serves as a bridge between the past and the present, providing insights into the challenges faced by submariners during the war. The Submarine USS Bowfin, a Balao-class submarine, was launched in 1942 and participated in numerous wartime patrols, earning its place in naval lore.

The USS Missouri Memorial

The USS Missouri battleship is known as the last battleship. She was the location of the Japanese surrender at the end of WWII. The USS Missouri served in WWII, Korea, and the Gulf War. Today, she is a Museum ship docked at Ford Island in Pearl Harbor. The Missouri is positioned in line with the Arizona Memorial. Together, they represent the beginning and the end of WWII.

Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum

Located on Ford Island, the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum comprises two hangars and the control tower of the former Naval Air Station Pearl Harbor. These building were present during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. This gives the Pearl Habor Aviation Museum the distinction of being the only aviation museum that is also an aerial battlefield. The Aviation Museum has a collection of aircraft spanning multiple generations from WWII to the Gulf War.
